For instance, the toothpaste market has many brands like Colgate and Pepsodent, but each has small differences in taste or packaging. Sellers in this market are like monopolists because they offer a unique product, but they also face competition because other brands are close substitutes.
Oligopoly is when a few sellers control a market. They may sell identical or different products, and each firm has significant control over the market price.
