Active and passive voice

I. Transform these statements from active to passive.

Direct and Indirect speech

I. Read the conversation below and complete the paragraph in reported speech.

‘What do you want, young woman? Gabriel’s mother asked her.

‘One of my hens flew across the fence this morning. Did it not lay an egg here?’

The old woman’s reply was not very polite. We didn’t see anything of it,’she said. ‘We collect our own eggs and have no need for other people’s eggs. And we don’t go looking for eggs in other people’s yards!’

Answers:

Gabriel’s mother asked the young woman what she wanted. The woman replied that one of her hands had flown across the fence that morning. She wanted to know if it hadn’t laid an egg there. The old woman’s reply was not very polite. She said that they had not seen anything of that. She further said that they collected their own eggs and had no need for other people’s eggs. At last, she said that they did n’t go looking for eggs in other people’s yards.

II. Read the conversation below and complete the paragraph in reported speech.

Peacock: Have you ever seen such feathers?
Monkey: Never!
Peacock: Have you seen such a beautiful tail?
Monkey: No, never!
Peacock: Have you ever heard such a sweet voice?
Monkey: No! And I have never seen such a proud fool!

The peacock asked the monkey if he had ever seen such feathers. The monkey said he had never seen. The peacock then asked if he had seen such a beautiful tail. The monkey answer remained the same. When the peacock again questioned if he had ever heard such a sweet voice, the Monkey replied he had n’t and added that he had never seen such a proud fool, as well

III. Change the Indirect speech into Direct speech.

Once there was a wicked fairy in the Northern land. She was always unhappy and wanted to make others unhappy. So she stole the baby daughter of the king of Northern land and hid her somewhere. But in the Northern Land, there were three good fairies also. They said when the lovely princess would be fifteen years old,’ a prince with a true heart would come. He would find her and set her free.

The Wicked fairy said that there was no such prince anywhere on the earth. So the good fairies replied that in that case the prince would come from the moon or the other planets. He would come from somewhere, and set the princess free.

Answers:

The wicked fairy in the Northern Land thought, “She is always unhappy. And wants to make others unhappy. I steal the baby daughter of the king of Northern Land and hide her somewhere.”

But the three good fairies in the Northern Land felt differently. They said, “They are happy, and wants to make others happy. When the lovely princess will be fifteen, a prince with a true heart will come. He will find her and set her free.”

IV. Read the letter and report the contents to a friend by filling in the blanks.

The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse were cousins. They often wrote to each other. One day, the Country Mouse got this letter from his cousin.

He requested the  country mouse to let him stay with him.
